Lurie’s Children’s Hospital of Chicago

Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy. Since 1985, we have granted more than 13,000 wishes in Illinois.

Any child in Illinois between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 with a physician-certified life-threatening illness or medical condition is eligible for a wish.

Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Wishes are more than just a nice thing. And they are far more than gifts, or singular events in time.

Wishes impact everyone involved—wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments.

Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.

Welcome to the Gift of Adoption Fund. Our mission is to fill the void that separates child from family – through adoption assistance grants that give vulnerable children a permanent home and the chance to thrive.

Because they were blessed with the resources to afford the financial burden poised by three adoptions, Lucy and Gene decided to pay it forward. So in 1996, with the sole purpose of helping children get adopted, the Wyka’s establish a private family giving foundation: The Gift of Adoption Fund.

To strength their vision, Lucy and Gene changed the legal status of the fund from a private to a public charity. This allowed affiliate organizations – chapters – to then be formed. Functioning as fundraising partners, these chapters share the Gift of Adoption Fund’s non-profit 501(c) 3 status while rallying local efforts across the country.
